Bamboo and Walnut Dresser

I’ve been busy in the shop building this new dresser inspired by IAONNE Design. This piece is a personal project for our master bedroom. The exterior is bamboo plywood. The drawer fronts are walnut plywood. It has softclose Blum Tandem drawer slides and custom made aluminum and bamboo legs. It’s one solid piece weighing in at 150lbs (at least)! I sprayed it with a water-based satin finish. Natural, unstained walnut and bamboo make a beautiful blend.

Simple Vanagon Drink Console

I just built this console for my 1984 Vanagon. The whole point was to keep it low and out of the way, for easy access to the back. It’s made from scraps from around the shop. A perfect fit.

A few weeks ago modgrain took a break from woodworking and spent some quality time with my daughter Sophia… we turned the garage into a art studio and created a 50 inch piece of art. The project incorporates a years worth (from age 4 to 5) of “girl” drawings by Sophia. Here are a few pics showing some of the process! Good old fashioned quality time, good fun and awesome art!

Here’s a cool custom application of the secure iPad stand.

From the original post: Over the period of a few weeks we were able to get things worked out. Part of the project included me sending my mount to a friends CNC machine to cut away excess material on the mount. The result is a great looking and really functional mount. I love the metal pins that hold the iPad secure. The mount also allows for rotation of the iPad so depending on the content I am reading I can change the display. The build quality and finish are really nice and feel like furniture not like a cheap book stand or plastic stand. Best of all the material has an organic quality and the aluminum pins compliment the aluminum arm of the monitor stand and iPad body.

Custom iPad Pedestal Part 2

Modgrain just completed a custom iPad Pedestal for LOUD Technologies Inc. They are using it at the NAMM conference – in Anaheim, CA. Below are a few photos of the finished piece. The pedestal features 4 iPad stands, a black base, and a natural maple top. In a previous post you can see some of the production photos.

Modgrain recently shipped a iPad stand to to Woodinville, WA. The buyer (LOUD Technologies Inc.) loved it so much that they contacted me about doing a custom piece…. and ultimately commissioned Modgrain to create and build a custom iPad Pedestal for their upcoming tradeshow NAMM – in Anaheim, CA.

Thanks to the good people at LOUDtech (they are very nice), It was a very efficient and simple process. A few emails, a couple discussions a a preliminary estimate and a quick design, including 3D drawings and animation (see below). Also, below are some of the process photos so far. I’ll update them as the project progresses.

This is the first project that I have been challenged with creating a “ebony” like finish (not included in this 3D animation). And, I’m happy to say that after 3 coats of water based black die mixed with India Ink and 2 coats (so far…. a couple more to come) of a ECO friendly satin topcoat, that it’s looking really nice. I can’t wait to mount the top and 4 custom, secure iPad stands. It’s going to be sweet!

As designers, we are continually striving for the most strategic or creative solutions. If you find yourself stuck on a problem or are thinking everything has been done before. Or, maybe you just need a little boost of creative inspiration? Watch and listen to children. Kids love to play, learn and create! Their purity and innocent approach is the foundation of creativity and discovery. When I watch my daughter paint, draw, do crafts, or play… it’s always refreshing and a powerful reminder that creativity and discovery is infinite.
